Youth in the Triangle’s most underserved neighborhoods face poverty, unemployment, substance addiction and abuse, higher rates of crime, obesity and child maltreatment.
As we look toward an uncertain and challenging future, one thing we can be sure of is all of our communities will need leaders with honor and integrity. We’ll need leaders that know the value of serving others. ScoutReach is a term that describes an umbrella of programs we use to break down barriers such as transportation, consistent leadership, safe meeting places and financial resources to instill the values of the Scout Oath and Law in our hardest to serve markets. Youth recruited through the Triangle ScoutReach Initiative will experience the same positive character building attributes as all Scouts.
In order to reach our most at-risk and disadvantaged youth, we would like to use ten part-time paid Program Specialists in each market to deliver traditionally based Scouting programming to schools (in-school and afterschool) and other partner organizations that have limited access to preventive values based character and educational programming.
These programs would include:
♦ Curriculum driven Scouting programs ♦ outdoor adventure; community service ♦ career exploration ♦ incentive/performance based supplemental programs based on school performance, academic attendance, and Scouting.
♦ Establish an outreach Scouting program serving at least 2,500 at-risk members annually in underserved neighborhoods throughout Durham and Raleigh.
♦ Enhance quality of the Scouting Experience for youth due to the improved program leadership of the newly created positions of Durham Outreach Director, Wake Outreach Director and increased part-time Program Specialists.
♦ Maximize youth participation through the removal of the financial barriers and increased available aid.
